As sad as I will be to leave Hanoi, it’s perhaps just as well that I’ll finally be on my way during the city’s least lovable season.
While autumnal Hanoi is cool and romantic, and winter Hanoi is fresh and clear, nobody could love this early spring weather.
Temperature wise it’s not hot but humidity is so high there are pools of water on all the tiled floors and my bed feels horribly damp.
Nothing will dry and despite it being only 12 centigrade the humidity causes a nasty cold sweaty sheen on your forehead and down your back.
So what of Granada? Well today is supposed to reach 34 degrees and 74% humidity – actually the same as Hanoi – though hopefully that warmer temperature will at least mean my sweats won’t be cold ones.
I’ve been trying to work out just what the weather in Granada will be like. Geographically speaking it’s virtually in line with Saigon so the seasons will be less defined than in Hanoi where hot, cold and wet are very noticeable.
I read that living on the banks of Ometepe causes higher humidity but I’m hoping it’ll also mean cooling breezes. Hanoi doesn’t do breeze – just exhaust fumes.
Certainly, I’m convinced that the heat of Hanoi’s summer, where 40 centigrade plus does occur, is only made worse by the air pollution. Here’s hoping that, with Granada seemingly not nearly so choked by traffic, it’ll be all the more bearable on even the hottest days.
While I dream of peace, quiet and tranquility after the madness of Hanoi, I have been told that Granada can be quite a noisy town.
Sorry, I’m willing to take it all back if I am wrong, but without Hanoi's several million scooters and their nasty horns, and without loud speakers on every lamppost booming out Communist Party messages, just where will Granada's noise come from?
Boisterous neighbours maybe. Fiesta fire crackers ok. The occasional toot from a pick-up truck horn. Yeah I can see all that.
But you haven’t known noise till you’ve lived in Hanoi.
I mean, just how bad can Granada be? I guess I’ll find out soon enough.
How's that for tempting fate?
